Catch up on the latest news from Writers Victoria and the literary sector

Writers Vic members get a first look at our Season 1 program this week and an opportunity to win a $200 gift voucher from our friends at Embiggen Books.

Our 2017 program has been designed to celebrate the value of words in the world - both through how we recognise the impact of our literary community and by highlighting the different ways that writers can develop their craft (and make a living in the process).

Five aspiring writers from migrant backgrounds have been shortlisted for the 2016 Deborah Cass Prize.

Now in its second year, the prize was established in the memory of Melbourne writer Deborah Cass and aims to support unpublished authors from a migrant background to find a voice and to encourage them to finish and publish their work.

We would like to thank all of our 2016 Subscriber-thon supporters for providing the amazing writerly goodies for our prizes.

This week, we spotlight our friends at Hargreaves Hill,  Padre Coffee and Pilot Press.

Over the last weeks, we have begun implementing the final stages of upgrading our database and launching the members-only section of our website.

We have been working hard to ensure the transition goes as smoothly as possible, but there are a number of glitches that we are still working out with our developers.

Empty chairs in an exam hall

As Chair of Writers Victoria, I was dismayed by last week’s news that the Federal Government is planning to remove VET FEE Help from the Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing (PWE).

This move is retrograde on a number of levels.

Welcome to our monthly brag about our Writers Victoria community members who have won awards, been shortlisted or longlisted for writing prizes or received industry recognition.

Many thanks to everyone who completed our annual member surveys earlier this year.

We use the surveys to support and improve the work that we do, develop new project ideas, and make sure our program is responding to the needs of our members and writing community.

Who are our members?

Surveys were completed by 180 members (2015; 185), 259 lapsed members (2015; 18) and 72 non-members (2015; 36). These 180 member responses represent approximately 5.29% of our total membership base of 3,400 members.
