Welcome to our monthly brag about our Writers Victoria community members who have won awards, been shortlisted or longlisted for writing prizes or received industry recognition.

Collective Celebrations

Melbourne-based literary magazine The Lifted Brow and RMIT’s non/fictionLab have announced the longlist for their Prize for Experimental Nonfiction. Amongst the longlisted writers are:

  • Sarah Vincent, member, for ‘What Should I Call This?’
  • Jean Bachoura, member, for ‘TRETINOIN’

Kill Your Darlings (KYD) has announced the contributors to its inaugural annual print collection of short stories, 'New Australian Fiction', due to be published in October 2019. The contributors are:

  • Tony Birch, tutor
  • Andrea Gillum, member
  • Anne Hotta, member
  • Wayne Marshall. member
  • AS Patrić, tutor
  • Allee Richards, member

Individual Celebrations

Sophie Cunningham, tutor, received an AM in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours for ‘significant service to literature as an author, editor and role model’. Her most recent titles are City of Trees: Essays on Life, Death & Need for a Forest (Text), Warning: The Story of Cyclone Tracy (Text) and Melbourne (NewSouth). Cunningham is a founding member of the Stella Prize, was editor of Meanjin from 2008–2011 and served on the board of the Australia Council from 2011–2014.

Maxine Beneba Clarke, tutor, has won the Boston GlobeHorn Book Award in the picture book category for ‘The Patchwork Bike’

Paddy O’Reilly, tutor, has been longlisted for the £30,000 (A$54,500) Sunday Times Audible Short Story Award
