Welcome to our monthly brag about our Writers Victoria community members who have won awards, been shortlisted or longlisted for writing prizes or received industry recognition.

The 2019 Inky Awards longlist have been announced. Presented by State Library Victoria (SLV) for works written for young adults. Amongst those longlisted for the Gold Inky Award (for an Australian book) are:


The shortlists for the 2019 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards have been announced. Amongst the shortlisted titles are:

Christina Stead Prize for Fiction

UTS Glenda Adams Award for New Writing

Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry

  • Judith Bishop, member, for ‘Interval’
  • Chris Wallace-Crabbe, member, for Rondo

Multicultural NSW Award

  • Magdalena McGuire, member, for ‘Home Is Nearby’


The longlists for the Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIAs) 2019 have been announced.

Amongst those longlisted are:

Book of the year for older children (ages 13+)

  • Eliza Henry-Jones, tutor, for ‘P is for Pearl’ 

Book of the year for younger children (ages 7-12)

  • Andy Griffiths, tutor, for ‘The 104-Storey Treehouse’

Children’s picture book of the year (ages 0-6)

  • Jane Godwin, tutor, for ‘Go Go and the Silver Shoes’

Small publishers’ adult book of the year

  • Angela Meyer, tutor, ‘A Superior Spectre’


Individual Celebrations

  • Imbi Neeme, member, has won the 2019 Penguin Random House Literary Prize for ‘The Spill’
  • Scot Gardner, member, has been shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year Awards 2019 for ‘Changing Gear’
  • Robert Lukin, member, has been longlisted for the 2019 ALS Gold Medal for ‘The Everlasting Sunday’ 
  • Catherine Watkins, member, has been longlisted for the 2019 Fish Short Story Award (Ireland) for ‘The Long Silence’
  • Writers Victoria has announced that author and academic Eleanor Hogan has been awarded the $15,000 Hazel Rowley Literary Fellowship for her proposed biography of Ernestine Hill and Daisy Bates.
