Coming of Age novels come in all shapes and sizes and for different markets. They are often the books we adored as younger readers, and a story shape we strive to replicate when we write. So, what are the elements of these novels and how can we best learn from, write and market them? In this practical workshop, participants will read samples, discuss, plan and do writing exercises to support them to craft their own coming of age novel, be it already in progress, or still just a dream.

This workshop will take place online. Detailed instructions for participation will be provided.

You will learn:

  • The key elements of a Coming of Age novel
  • Excellent examples of the genre, for both YA and adult audiences
  • How to think about and show character development and growth
  • Strategies to compel and engage readers in the emotional growth of your character
  • Practical tools and advice for getting the words down, and the project completed!

Please Bring:

Laptop or writing materials, a favourite Coming of Age novel in whatever way you’d like to interpret it, and an elevator pitch of their current WIP or idea
