Great prose, action and ideas can all be for nothing if readers don’t care enough to keep turning the pages. In this workshop with award-winning author Emma Viskic, you will expand your knowledge of one of the most important elements of writing: creating an emotional connection with you readers. With practical exercises, tips and examples, you’ll leave this workshop with the tools necessary to create stories your reader will remember for a long time to come. For fiction and non-fiction, beginners to advanced.

This workshop will take place online. Detailed instructions for participation will be provided.

You will learn:

  •  How to make your plot more engaging
  •  The art of subtext: Why letting readers ‘read between the lines’ is so important
  •  How to write immersive scenes
  •  How and when to ‘show’ and ‘tell’
  •  How to engage all the senses


About Emma Viskic

Emma Viskic’s critically acclaimed Caleb Zelic series has won numerous prizes, including a Ned Kelly Award and an unprecedented five Davitt Awards.  Formerly a classical clarinettist, Emma’s musical career ranged from performing with José Carreras, to playing at an engagement party that ended in a brawl. She learned Australian sign language (Auslan) in order to write the character of Caleb, who is profoundly deaf. Emma lives in Naarm/Melbourne and is currently working on the fourth Caleb Zelic novel, Those Who Perish.
