Summary:

This workshop will encourage participants towards a deeper understanding and exploration of the craft of short fiction writing. We will look at some of the key elements of the form and analyse what makes a great work of short fiction. What can be achieved, for example, in 2,000 words that can never be achieved with a novel? Students will also be given in-class writing exercises and guidance towards the completion of their own short fiction work.

  • An insight into the short fiction form: from folk tales and fables to contemporary fiction

  • An insight into the distinguishing features of the short fiction form, particularly when put up against the novel

  • An analysis of some of the key elements that go towards making a great work of short fiction

  • Some practical tips towards starting and structuring your work

  • Confidence to explore and realise your own short fiction ideas

 

About Wayne Macauley

Wayne Macauley’s short fiction has been published in numerous magazines and journals and his collection, Other Stories, was shortlisted for a Queensland Premiers Literary Award. He has also published six novels, variously shortlisted and/or longlisted for: the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award (three times), the Western Australian Premier’s Book Award, the Melbourne Prize Best Writing Award, the Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature, the Voss Literary Award and the Miles Franklin Award.
