Summary:

Fear Itself is a workshop designed for early/emerging writers with an interest in writing horror fiction, whether you have previously worked in the genre or just want to test the dark and murky waters. We will explore contemporary horror, along with its significant subgenres, and look at employing various craft elements in the specific context of writing horror fiction. There will also be an emphasis on short writing exercises and peer discussion during the course.

You will learn:

  •  How to create and deliver effective monsters, both scary and sympathetic
  •  How to manage the subjectivity of fear in horror fiction
  •  How to build tension and suspense to hook (and hopefully scare!) your readers
  •  How to effectively employ unreliable narrators and fractured narratives
  •  How to identify and avoid tropes and clichés - and know when to subvert them.

 

About Kirstyn McDermott

Kirstyn McDermott has been working in the darker alleyways of speculative fiction for much of her career and her two novels, Madigan Mine and Perfections, each won the Aurealis Award for Best Horror Novel. Her most recent book is Caution: Contains Small Parts, a collection of dark fiction published by Twelfth Planet Press., Kirstyn lives in Ballarat and is pursuing a creative PhD at Federation University.
