Writing/Being in Place with Catherine Noske

Writing place...

Details

The natural spaces of Australia offer rich environments for writing, as our literary history shows.  Some wonderful works of writing have come from experiences of place. But it is not easy to ‘capture’ living environments, in all their complexities, on the page.  This workshop will be a chance to get out into the natural world and wrestle with the problem of writing it. We’ll look at strategies for feeling out and representing the experience of place, and explore the manner in which place as a concept is constructed.  We’ll test the difference between (passive) setting and (active) place in writing, and how each might emerge in works of prose and poetry.

Please note that in addition to writing materials, participants should bring lunch and water/drinks as we will be out on the road and food may not be available where we land at lunchtime. Please dress warmly and be prepared for the possibility of mud and rain!

You will learn

  • About place-making and world-building as concepts, and the difference between them
  • Techniques for writing place, and try some exercises
  • The difference between writing place and writing setting
  • How to write ‘living’ places through writing from ‘being’
  • Get the chance to explore the writing of place within a natural environment – we’re going on the road!

This tour is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria and presented in association with Warm Winter Words.
